Land assembly is tough in Tokyo; families often have owned little tiny plots for generations. These become their main source of income and they rarely sell them, to develop them, they often build really silly and inefficient sliver buildings with minuscule footprints. This one, by Martin Van Der Linden of Van Der Architects, has a floor area of 74.4 square meters, or 800 square feet. What is also fascinating, and depressing, is that it makes more economic sense to build a parking tower than an apartment building.

The designers of Tate Modern and Beijing’s Bird’s Nest stadium have produced not a new cultural behemoth but a strange sculptural structure, reviving the idea of the car park as a figure in the city. A stack of raw, sharply chamfered concrete layers is prised apart by wedge-shaped columns, which wind into each other and draw the eye into the slightly sinister shadows against the vivid blue of the Florida sky. A Spanish company has developed an effective underground bike parking system they called The Biceberg. They come in different sizes and depths, depending on needs and space requirements. There are different sizes available – 23, 46, 69 or 92 bicycles. Depending on the size the watertight container that stores the bikes needs a hole between 1.5 m and 5.25 m in depth.
